Oh no!
Your protagonist is hanging off the edge of a cliff, their fingers slipping from the rocky terrain, and the wind whistling in their ears.
Write a scene leaving your character in peril, without resolving their fate, and make it thrilling and creative!
A physical danger cliffhanger is when you leave your character in a nail-biting, life-threatening situation, creating tension and the need to find out what happens next.
Famous Examples:
Remember when Luke Skywalker dangled off a platform after his face-off with Darth Vader?
Or when Jesse Pinkman was kidnapped and held at gunpoint?
Those are prime examples of how leaving your character in peril can keep your readers hooked and clamouring for more.
Tips:
First, donβt use this technique too often, or itβll lose its impact.Β
You donβt want to be the writer who cried wolf.
Second, make the danger believable! You canβt just have your character fall off a cliff and land on a bouncy castle. Thatβs just not going to cut it.
Lastly, begin with the end in mind. Think of a tricky spot and work backwards to figure out how your lovable idiot got there.
So, let your imagination runΒ wild!
Create a thrilling, heart-pumping situation that leaves your readers hanging on the edge of their seats.
Make the danger feel real and believable, and your readers will thank you for it. Now go forth and write like the brilliant creative genius you are!
